About La Mariposa Elementary School
{Distinguished School} La Mariposa Elementary School is a K-5 school located at 4800 Corte Olivas in Camarillo (Map | School Layout). La Mariposa opened its doors September, 2002. We are a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school serving approximately 650 students in Eastern Camarillo. The population of La Mariposa School consists of mostly native English-speaking students. Our English Language Learners represent a wide variety of language backgrounds. La Mariposa School has tremendous community and parent support.

The La Mariposa School vision is to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment in which all students participate in an engaging standards based curriculum. We strive to achieve academic excellence, foster positive self esteem, and prepare students to become cooperative and productive citizens. To support and extend student achievement, we have established a strong partnership between the home, the school, and the community.
La Mariposa School (LMS) is located in a relatively new suburban Camarillo neighborhood in Ventura County. Since opening in 2002, we have developed a culture of professional collaboration, working together with generosity and commitment to develop a rigorous curriculum with high expectations for student achievement and behavior. Our fundamental goal is to promote a warm, nurturing family atmosphere that encourages and celebrates student learning. The entire school community takes pride in our bright, clean, and well-organized facility.
LMS is a community of learners where parents, students, and staff work collegially to develop respectful and responsible students. Our instructional program is aligned with state standards. Teachers assess students regularly throughout the school year to identify student strengths and areas of difficulty. Assessments guide instruction to help students meet or exceed standards. Students not meeting standards are provided with a variety of interventions. LMS is home to a diverse group of students who speak 13 different languages. We differentiate instruction and use current research-based best practices to ensure the academic growth of all students.
Many educational programs enrich the LMS learning experience. All classrooms perform musical plays. Science is enriched through Life Lab, a horticultural program where students learn about plant life and the environment. LMS has an extensive recycling program. Family Science Night further encourages student interest in science. Students learn about history as they take field trips to local historical sites, participate in gold rush and colonial days, and perform plays that emphasize historical content. Visual arts are taught at all grade levels, from Monart in kindergarten, Impressionists and Beyond in first grade to Art In the Classroom supported by PTA in grades 2-5.
Our parent community is very supportive of the educational programs at LMS and has high expectations for their children. Parents support our school programs with time and resources. Last year, parent volunteers logged 7,357 hours of service. LMS parents volunteer as classroom helpers, in Life Lab gardens, at the school book fair, and as daily home-reading coaches to name just a few. PTA raises money with an annual Jog-a-Thon. The proceeds from this event are used to equip our state-of-the-art computer lab, purchase SuccessMaker licenses, and provide field trips, assemblies, and classroom enrichment materials.
LMS is a caring school. Students develop a sense of compassion, community involvement, and global responsibility through such projects as Food Share, Project Understanding, American Heart Association, Operation Seabee, Ventura County Children’s Services, our Peer Buddy program and the integration of County students with Special Needs in our classrooms.
